This is a specialty 24-ounce hammer filled with metal shot to make it a "deadblow" style, which reduces bounce-back when hammering. The brass face is used to avoid marring surfaces while hammering, and the softer plastic backside can also be used for an even gentler touch. With a careful hand these hammers can be used for fretting, and this is also a popular style for gunsmiths and metalworking. We find that this is a great hammer to have on the workbench for building cigar box guitars and other woodworking - it has enough heft for more forceful use, but is still small and gentle enough for more delicate work.
