This is a human interest true story. The late 1950s and 1960s represented a period during which safety and occupational hazards were not fully recognized as significant concerns. Over the past fifty years, numerous safeguards have been implemented to address these issues. It is both remarkable and commendable to observe the evolution of safety practices related to hazardous substances in the workplace as we perceive them today. However, it is essential to acknowledge that much work remains.Regrettably, many colleagues, friends, family members, and acquaintances have succumbed to various health issues during this time. Many lives could have been improved had past societies possessed our current understanding of asbestosis and other related lung diseases. This reflection emphasizes the importance of enhancing our comprehension and awareness of health-related matters in the workplace.Asbestosis is classified as an occupational disease resulting from worker exposure to inhaled asbestos fibres while performing job-related tasks. Lung diseases are prevalent among individuals employed in sectors such as construction, insulation, electrical work, plumbing, manufacturing, mining, and shipbuilding. Unfortunately, no individual is exempt from the potential risk of developing some form of lung disease. The consequences of asbestosis extend beyond those directly employed in these industries. Friends, family members, and colleagues may also be at risk due to shared exposure to these hazardous fibres. In the summer of 1997, I experienced hospitalization for a collapsed lung. Initially, I attributed my breathing difficulties to what I believed was a severe cold; however, the situation escalated to a critical level while I was showering prior to my visit to the emergency department.Upon my arrival at the hospital, I was barely able to walk in; had I delayed further, there might not have been any asbestosis-related documentation from my perspective. Following a series of tests, the prognosis indicated a small area of fibrosis in one lung, and I was reassured that there was no immediate cause for concern at that time. My collapsed lung was successfully reinflated and repaired. Now, twenty-five years later, both my life and the lives of my family and friends have undergone significant changes. Based on the information available to me, I was likely exposed to hazardous materials from the late 1970s to the early to mid-1980s.The following writings capture real-life experiences, showcasing a diverse range of emotions and events, both positive and negative. They stand as a testament to the many individuals who have generously shared their time, care, love, experiences, and knowledge. Their collective support has empowered me to embrace life to the fullest, approach the future with optimism, and appreciate each day with gratitude. These writings chronicle the profound impact of this terminal illness not only on me but also on my wife, family members, friends, and colleagues. As a result of this illness, numerous significant changes have occurred in our lives. It is important to acknowledge that positivity can emerge from any situation, although it may take a thorough exploration to uncover it.A journey I would never wish upon anyone.
