PRP Hair Restoration Q & A
What is platelet-rich plasma?
Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a therapy that taps your body’s own restorative and regenerative powers to promote hair growth.
Your blood contains four ingredients:
- Red blood cells
- White blood cells
- Platelets
- Plasma
The plasma is the liquid in which the cells and platelets travel, and your platelets are there to clot your blood when necessary. Your platelets also contain hundreds of proteins, or growth factors, which aid in healing.
Recognizing the usefulness of these growth factors, medical researchers figured out how to isolate your platelets and put them to work. Here’s how:
- Dr. Ohanian draws some blood from you.
- She places the blood in a high-powered centrifuge to separate the platelets.
- The doctor takes the platelets and mixes them back in with your plasma.
The resulting concentrate is 5-10 times richer in platelets than your normal blood.
How does PRP restore hair?
Once Dr. Ohanian creates a concentrate that’s rich in your own platelets, she injects the mixture in areas where your hair is thinning. The platelets immediately set to work and do what they do best -- repair and regenerate. In the case of your scalp, the PRP works to create new hair follicles.
In addition to creating new hair follicles, the PRP treatments work to maintain the health of your existing hair follicles, protecting the hair you do have.
How many treatments do I need?
The answer to this largely depends upon the extent of your hair loss. Most patients require three to four treatments, spaced four weeks apart. The reason for the time in between is to allow your platelets to go to work in creating new hair follicles. This way, during your subsequent treatments, Dr. Ohanian has a better idea of the areas she needs to target further.
The treatments themselves usually don’t take long, and there’s no downtime associated with PRP hair restoration. You may feel some soreness at the site of the injections, but this discomfort is usually short-lived.
When will I see results?
Your results are gradual since it takes time for your new hair to grow. After about two to three months, you’ll begin to notice an improvement, and these results only increase over the following months.
To maintain your results, Dr. Ohanian recommends you come back for PRP treatments every six months after your initial course of treatment.
