Healthy Habits That Maintain Healthy Hair

Healthy Habits That Maintain Healthy Hair

If you want to improve the appearance and health of your hair, there are things you can start doing now to achieve results.

At Bergen Aesthetics, Heripsime Ohanian, PhD, MD, FACOG, offers a variety of aesthetic services in-office to help enhance your natural beauty. Dr. Ohanian can even address thinning or lost hair that can occur with aging with minimally invasive platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.

Whether you’re a candidate for PRP hair restoration or not, your natural hair can still benefit from these healthy habits:

Choose hair products for your hair type

There are several different types of hair — oily, dry, damaged, color-treated. When shopping for shampoos and conditioners, make sure you choose those formulated for your hair type.

Invest in a good conditioner

Conditioning your hair can help improve its health, especially if your hair is color-treated or damaged. A good conditioner can also prevent flyaway hair and offer some protection against damage from the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun.

Focus on the scalp

When washing your hair, massage the shampoo only into your scalp and not the full length of your hair. This helps remove dirt and build up that can dull your hair.

The massaging motion also stimulates blood circulation in the scalp that can support new hair growth.

Protect hair from chemicals

Minimize your use of chemical products when styling your hair. If you swim frequently, consider wearing a cap that protects your hair from chlorine damage.

Eat better for healthy hair

Don’t ignore the role your diet plays in healthy hair. Eat a well-balanced diet that contains proteins like fish, beans, eggs, and lean meats. Not getting enough protein can increase your risk for hair breakage and hair loss.

You also want to incorporate zinc into your daily diet. This essential nutrient can be found in fresh vegetables, fruits, and different types of nuts. Without enough zinc, you may be at increased risk for excessive hair shedding and loss.

Brush carefully

You should brush your hair daily to keep it healthy and shiny. However, don’t brush your hair when it’s wet.

Wet hair is three times more likely to break off, so you should comb it gently with a wide-toothed comb to prevent tangles.

When to consider PRP hair restoration

Hair restoration may be an option for you if your hair is noticeably thinning or if you’re losing excess amounts of hair. These issues can happen as you get older or because of underlying health issues.

Dr. Ohanian can physically examine your scalp and determine if PRP therapy can give you the results you want. If you are a candidate, she takes PRP from your own blood to complete the treatment.

After drawing a sample of your blood, the team spins it in a centrifuge to separate PRP from other blood materials. The resulting high concentration of PRP is what Dr. Ohanian injects into specific points in your scalp.

Over time, PRP stimulates your hair follicles to produce new hair growth. While you won’t get results immediately, this regenerative therapy can help you grow your own natural hairs in the weeks after treatment. You may need maintenance injections of PRP every six months to achieve your desired results.
